Also, unless I totally misunderstood Dr Hans analysis, the idea of the five men as being merely artners in sin and not husbands aligns better with his explanation of the allegorical sense of the Ba’als.

Also, the idea that Jesus could have heard about all these men from count gossip seems like a bit of a stretch, since He had only just arrived in town for the first time and had stopped at the well. She knew he was a Jew, so she knew he had arrived from out of town, and the fact that he’s thirsty and tired by the well indicates he just finished traveling.

same word, ἀνήρ, can be translated as either ’man’ or ’husband’. More to the point, in context, both Jesus and Photinai are saying and hearing that word based on their own knowledge and/or presuppositions. In this sense, Jesus’ remarks to her are humorously ironic. I really appreciate the connection between this passage and the corresponding passages in the old testament, which Dr Hahn illuminated quite well. However I think this falls under the allegorical sense of scripture, and the interpretation of the literal sense as presented in this podcast is perhaps slightly off. It seems that the passage has translated in most major English translations is taken at face value, without any sort of critical look at the original Greek. In other words, the (cont.)
